SaveOceans Community

Beyond creating a product, we aimed to make a greater impact by engaging with the community and raising awareness about sustainability and the consequences of single-use plastics. The first two sessions took place in The Marvel College based in Hull.

The Deliverables

Each session began with a presentation highlighting the concept of sustainability and the importance of integrating sustainable practices into our daily lives. The presentation also addressed the environmental impact of single-use plastics, with a particular focus on the increasing levels of waste they contribute to globally.

Starter Task

Following the presentation, a brief introductory task was assigned, consisting of questions related to the content presented. This activity took approximately five minutes to complete

Task 1

After completing the starter activity and presenting their responses to the initial task, students are introduced to Task 1. This task challenges them to transform a plastic bottle into a completely new creation. Each student receives a planning sheet outlining the required materials and steps for construction. Once planning is complete, students are each provided with a plastic bottle (collected during our beach cleanup) and are given the opportunity to bring their designs to life.

The Results

All participating students created innovative products using single-use plastic bottles. The resulting items showcased a wide range of creativity, including piggy banks (top right), small baskets (bottom right), bird feeders, and several other imaginative designs. In both sessions the best product selected won a small prize, and there was an overall winner of the day, displayed on the colleges social media and monthly newsletter.

The Outcomes

Approximately 35 students participated in the two sessions, successfully completing both tasks. They demonstrated the ability to transform discarded plastic bottles into entirely new creations, highlighting the significance of recycling.

Task 2

After completing Task 1, a separate task was introduced to be completed at home. This task required students to redesign the packaging of a small bag of Haribo sweets provided to them. The students’ design outcomes were subsequently reviewed during the following design and technology lesson upon their return to their next lesson.
